Zanskar is one least explored destination of the Union Territory of Ladakh. It is one of the most beautiful mountainous civilizations in Northern India. The headquarters of Zanskar is Padum town where one will find little shops and most of the tourist accommodations of the valley. Zanskar is a sparsely populated region scattered across tiny hamlets. The region is Popular among adventure lovers and backpackers and has a lot more to offer for its visitors. In winter the river which flows through the valley completely freezes and people walk on the frozen river which is popularly known as Chadar Trek. In summer the same is known for rafting expeditions. Once the popular 22 days Lamayuru to Darcha trek goes from the Zanskar region which is considered to be the toughest trek in the Indian Himalaya. Being known for its cold and harsh winter the semi-arid snowbound region of Himalaya is also known for the centuries old living monasteries of Tibetan Buddhism. Some of the popular monasteries in Zanskar are Fuktal Monastery, Sani Monastery, Karsha Monastery, Stongdey Monastery and Bardan Monastery. Zanskar can be reached via Shinkula pass from the Darcha, Himachal Pradesh, Penzila from Kargil and through an alternate route from Singeela.•.

Day wise Itinerary

  • 1 : Arrive, acclimatize and Rest | Stay - Leh

    Acclimitize and rest

    • You will be received by our tour executive and transfer to the pre booked hotel in Leh.
    • Unlike other tourist place in India your body needs a minimum 1 day of acclimatization in Ladakh
    • We recommend you to drink lots of water, just rest and do not do any physical activity.
    • In the evening around 5 o’clock our tour executive will give you a brief about the tour.
    • If health permits you can visit the Shanti stupa in the evening.
    • Dinner will be served in your hotel itself.

  • 2 : Leh local sight-seeing | Stay – Leh

    Local Sight Seeeing Leh

    • After having breakfast your driver will take you to the famous Thiksay,Hemis Monastery and Shey Palace.
    • Hemis is one of the largest and richest monasteries in Ladakh following the Drukpa Kargyud lineage of Tibeten Buddhism.
    • Located on a small hill in the village Thiksay. The Monastery was built in the 15th Century by Paldan Zangpo. It is one of the largest monasteries in Ladakh and follows the Gelugpa order of Tibetan Buddhism. The main attractions of the monastery are the 3 storey statue of Maitreya (Future Buddha), Assembly Hall and Tara Temple. The monastery is known for its architectural resemblance with the famous Potala Palace in Tibet.
    • After Thiksay you will be heading back towards Shey palace which is the ancient capital of Ladakh.
    • The main attraction at Shey is the huge copper gilded statue of Shakyamuni Budhha.

  • 3 : Leh to Lingshed | Stay – Lingshed

    Leh to Lingshed

    • Keep your bags packed in the evening. Leave at 7:00 am sharp and start your first day of the Zanskar tour.
    • The first 120km will be a smooth ride on the Leh Srinagar National Highway. After that you will take a detour towards the Singelalok region.
    • Today you will be staying in one of the most remote villages of Ladakh, Lingshed.
    • If you get free time, go for a walk into the village or read a book.
    • There will be a basic homestay where you will get home made dinner, a clean bed and warm blankets for the night.

  • 4 : Lingshed to Padum | Stay – Padum

    Lingshed to Padum

    • Today you will begin the rest of the journey towards Zanskar. We recommend you to leave as early as possible.
    • On the way you can visit the famous Zangla palace and Stongdey Monastery if time permits.
    • You will drive through a narrow road till you reach Zangla village. You will find road construction work happening at various places on your way to Padum.

  • 5 : Padum to Purney| Stay – Purney

    Phuktal Monastery

    • Today is one of the most exciting and adventurous days of your trip as you are visiting the 2500 years old Phuktal Monastery.
    • The picturesque Monastey built in a cave in the Lungnak region of Zanskar. It is one of the few monasteries in Ladakh where there is no motorable road, and one has to walk to reach.
    • After driving for about 3 hours from Padum you need to do 2 hrs treks from Purney villages where the road ends.
    • Phuktal monastery is considered one of the holiest monasteries in Ladakh.

  • 6 : Purney to Padum| Stay – Padum

    Back to Padum Zanskar

    • After breakfast at Purney you will head back towards Padum. On the way visit the beautiful Bardan Monastery.
    • By lunch you should be in your hotel in Padum and can have your lunch in the market where you will get a multi cuisine option.
    • After lunch head towards Sani village which is just 8 km from Padum.
    • Sani is also considered one of the holiest sites in the whole Zanskar as one can find the Stupa of Kanika which is claimed to have been built in the 2nd century. The site was also blessed by the great Indian Yogi Naropa in the 10th century and Guru Padmasambhava also mediated here for 5 years.

  • 7 : Padum to Kargil | Stay – Kargil

    Rangdum Monastery and Suru Valley

    • Driving to Kargil via Penzela pass will take 7 to 8 hours.
    • After crossing the Penzela Pass visit the famous Rangdum Monastery, which follows the Gelugpa order of Tibetan Buddhism.
    • Rangdum is midway between Kargil and Zanskar.
    • Pass through picturesque Suru valleys, witnessing the beauty of the Ladakhi landscape.
    • Arrive in Kargil, a bustling town located in the Ladakh.
    • Overnight stay in Kargil.

  • 8 : Kargil to Leh | Stay – Leh

    Head back to Leh

    • Today is your last day of Zanskar trip and expected to reach Leh by late evening.
    • In Kargil you will visit a village which is very close to the Pakistan border. It is said that the village was under the control of Pakistan till 1971. In 1974 the villages moved to a new part of the valley and settled there. Now the deserted village has been converted into a museum and a lot to be explored by the visitors.
    • A 30 ft tall statue of the future Buddha facing the Nation Highway is another attraction you must stop on your way to Leh. It is believed that that statue was built in the 2nd century during Kusana empire.
    • 130 km ahead of Leh on your way from Kargil Lamayuru is one of the oldest monasteries in Ladakh. Founded in the 11th century the Monastery follows the Drigyung Kagyud lineage of Tibetan Buddhism.
    • Stopover at Magnetic Hill, Gurdwara Pathar Sahib and Sangam Viewpoint.
    • Overnight stay in Leh

  • 9 : Tour Ends | Tour

    Fly back to Delhi

    • It's time to say goodbye to Ladakh with memories of a lifetime.
    • Your driver will drop you to KBRK Leh airport.

* 50% of the payment should be transferred at the time of booking the trip & balance to be paid 15 days before the tour starts.
* Ladakh Tales holds no responsibility for road blocks or flight cancelled or any unforeseen situation happening on tour.
* Child between 5 – 8 yrs will be considered under without bed charges (no bed / extra mattress will be provided) and child above 8 yrs will be considered as extra bed (extra mattress will be provided)

Cancellation & Refund Policy :
* 25% of the total tour cost will be charged if cancelled 15 days before the tour departure date.
* 50% cancellation charges if cancelled 10 days before the tour departure date.
* No cancellation refund will be made if cancelled before 9 days to departure date.
* No refund will be made once the tour starts.
